What is Psychology?

Book Review: What is Psychology?

As someone who has always been fascinated by the inner workings of the human mind, I was eager to dive into Ellen Pastorino and Susann Doyle-Portillo’s “What is Psychology?” And let me tell you, this book did not disappoint.

With a whopping 848 pages, this book covers an impressive array of topics within the field of psychology. From discussing the history of psychology as a discipline to examining contemporary research methods and findings, “What is Psychology?” truly leaves no stone unturned.

One thing that really stood out to me about this book was its accessibility. Despite being packed with information and insights, Pastorino and Doyle-Portillo present their ideas in a way that is clear and easy to understand. They also do an excellent job of incorporating real-world examples and case studies that help bring abstract concepts to life.

That being said, I do have a few criticisms of the book. At times, it felt like there was almost too much information packed into each chapter, making it difficult to absorb everything. Additionally, I would have liked to see more discussion around some of the more controversial or cutting-edge topics within psychology.

All that being said, “What is Psychology?” left me feeling deeply inspired and curious about the field. Learning about some of the incredible research that has been done in recent years (including studies on topics like mindfulness meditation and implicit bias) left me feeling hopeful about what we can achieve when we apply rigorous scientific methods to questions about human behavior.
