The Wholehearted Marriage

Book Review: The Wholehearted Marriage

As I delved into the pages of The Wholehearted Marriage by Greg Smalley and Shawn Stoever, I was pleasantly surprised to find a refreshing take on the subject of marriage that had me feeling both enlightened and inspired.

The authors, who are both relationship experts, use their extensive experience and insights to provide practical advice on how to build and maintain a strong, loving relationship with your partner. They do this by blending personal anecdotes with scientific research, resulting in an approachable read that is grounded in reality.

One of the aspects of this book that really resonated with me was its emphasis on vulnerability. The authors suggest that in order to cultivate a truly wholehearted marriage, couples must be willing to open themselves up to one another completely. This concept may seem daunting at first, but the way that Smalley and Stoever present it makes it feel both attainable and necessary.

Another standout feature of this book is its chapter on conflict resolution. In so many relationships, disagreements can quickly spiral out of control, causing lasting damage. However, the authors provide some great tools for navigating conflict in a healthy manner. They emphasize the importance of active listening and validation as key components for finding common ground with your partner.

Overall, I found The Wholehearted Marriage to be an engaging read that left me feeling motivated and hopeful about my own relationship. While there were some moments where the writing felt slightly repetitive or overly simplistic for my taste, these were minor quibbles in an otherwise well-crafted book.

Description : The Wholehearted Marriage offers practical tools for helping couples keep a passionate connection with one another and understand the role their hearts play in their lives. Drs. Smalley and Stoever maintain that circumstances, such as busy lifestyles, differences between spouses, personal baggage, the loss of a loved one, childhood trauma, etc., trigger reactions that condition us to close up our hearts for protection, blocking the flow of love. A disengaged, protected heart makes it impossible to experience an intimate, connected marriage. As a result, couples drift apart, trying to find some version of contentment, or they give up altogether and look for love somewhere else. Through their experiences in marriage counseling, Drs. Smalley and Stoever discovered that the commonly heard phrase "I don't love him/her anymore" is merely a camouflaged misunderstanding about what true love is and God's design for it. They affirm that love is more than just a feeling, and that to have true, lasting intimacy, couples need to learn to love wholeheartedly....
