A Life Worth Living

Book Review: A Life Worth Living

As I read through A Life Worth Living by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Isabella Selega Csikszentmihalyi, I found myself wholly captivated by the authors’ exploration of the concept of a meaningful life. The book delves into the idea that happiness goes beyond simple pleasures and instead relies on engaging in activities that challenge us and provide a sense of purpose.

One of the most striking aspects of this book is how it challenges conventional notions of what it means to live a fulfilling life. Through examining case studies and expert insights, the authors illustrate how true happiness comes from finding flow – a state in which we are fully immersed in an activity that challenges us just enough to push our skills to the limit but not so much that it becomes overwhelming.

I appreciated how the authors approach these ideas from both a research-based and philosophical perspective, drawing on examples from fields like psychology, anthropology, and sociology. They also make the concepts accessible to readers without academic backgrounds, breaking down complex ideas into easily digestible explanations.

Despite my enthusiasm for this book overall, I do think there were some areas where it fell short. At times, I found myself wishing for more concrete examples or practical advice on how to apply these concepts in my own life. While there are certainly takeaways to be gleaned from this book, readers may need to do some additional work to figure out how they can apply these ideas for themselves.

Overall though, A Life Worth Living left me feeling inspired and motivated to make changes in my own life. The Csikszentmihalys’ thoughtful exploration of what makes our lives meaningful is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever questioned their purpose or wondered if there’s more to life than just getting by day-to-day. Highly recommended.

Only when she received this question did she finally decide to tell her story. In this remarkable and inspiring memoir, Linehan describes how, when she was eighteen years old, she began an abrupt downward spiral from popular teenager to suicidal young woman. After several miserable years in a psychiatric institute, Linehan made a vow that if she could get out of emotional hell, she would try to find a way to help others get out of hell too, and to build a life worth living. She went on to put herself through night school and college, living at a YWCA and often scraping together spare change to buy food. She went on to get her PhD in psychology, specializing in behavior therapy. In the 1980s, she achieved a breakthrough when she developed Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, a therapeutic approach that combines acceptance of the self and ways to change. Linehan included mindfulness as a key component in therapy treatment, along with original and specific life-skill techniques. She says, "You can't think yourself into new ways of acting; you can only act yourself into new ways of thinking." Throughout her extraordinary scientific career, Marsha Linehan remained a woman of deep spirituality. Her powerful and moving story is one of faith and perseverance.
